Hugh Warwick comes to Help a Hedgehog on March 15th!!

Hugh Warwick, well known ecologist, author and hedgehog expert will be coming to Nailsworth's Arkell Community Centre to give a light-hearted and informative talk: "A Prickly Affair". Hugh will also sign copies of his book of the same title.

Refreshments including delicious cakes will be available before the talk.

Date: Thursday 15^th March 2012. Doors open at 7.00pm for refreshments and to view displays. Please be seated by 7.45pm

Help a Hedgehog Hospital has been busy over the last couple of months caring for more than 80 sick and underweight hedgehogs which have come to us recently. The weather has been mild for most of the winter and the hogs have been feeding well, once restored to health. Many have chosen not to hibernate, but the current cold weather has sent some of them to sleep.

We will be at the Festival of Birds on Saturday 4th February at Slimbridge WWT centre. Come and see us there - we will have a selection of greetings cards and other merchandise and information. All monies raised from sales go towards food and medication and vet fees, for the care of the hedgehogs.

Help a Hedgehog Hospital will be holding a stall at the following events in the next couple of weeks:

Wotton under Edge Charity Fair on Saturday 26th November at the Wotton Civic Centre - 10am - 4pm.

Stroud Goodwill Evening on Friday 2nd December from 5pm - 9pm.

Teckels Xmas Fair - 6pm -9pm

Our stall will also be outside the Stroud Subscription Rooms on Saturday 17th December from 10am -2pm when we will be drawing the winning tickets for our Grand Christmas Draw.

Finally, we will be at Tesco's Stroud store on Sunday 18th December with collecting buckets for your spare cash from Christmas shopping.

Then we will be going into hibernation till the Spring!

Autumn Hibernation Event at Bussage Village Hall

Come and meet a hedgehog at our Autumn Hibernation Event on Sunday 20th November from 10.00am - 2.00pm at Bussage Village Hall. There will be stalls selling our Calendars, Christmas cards and other items; teas, cakes, sweets and activities for children. Annie will be giving a talk about hedgehogs and there will be the opportunity to see some of the hedgehogs currently in our care.

Annie was invited to tell viewers about the problems facing hedgehogs......from bonfires, and the difficulty young hedgehogs have in gaining enough weight to hibernate and survive the winter. Please look out for small underweight hedgehogs and contact the hospital for help.

Special Delivery!
Aimee – named after the vet nurse who found her and notified the Hospital – came in with a neck
wound caused by plastic netting. Fortunately, the wound was superficial and healed well. We were
about to release her back to her home in King's Stanley, when she stopped feeding, and didn't
emerge from her box as she usually did in the evening.
Suspicions aroused, on June 9th, John listened closely and heard squeaking sounds! Aimee had
given birth to six healthy hoglets.
Apart from checking to make sure they were warm and comfortable, we disturbed them as little as
possible. Aimee resumed her healthy appetite for mealworms, crunchy cat biscuits and dog food.

Ten days old
At ten days old, the hoglets looked much like spiky little conkers, but by three weeks, their eyes
were open and they looked like miniature versions of mum.

Three weeks old
In the wild, the mother would normally lead her babies out to start learning to forage at about five
weeks, abandoning them altogether at about eight weeks. The young hedgehogs then disperse and
lead solitary lives, except for mating.
As this litter was confined to a pen, the mother was unable to forage for them as she would in the
wild, but they have learnt to find the food left for them and have been feeding on mealworms, and
cat crunchies. Aimee has been a very good mother and was still snuggling up to the youngsters,
even when they were eight weeks old.
Aimee has now returned to the garden in King's Stanley, where she was originally found, and the
young hedgehogs have gone to new homes in Paganhill and Rodborough. They have been released
in groups of three, two girls from one litter, and a boy from another, in the hope that they will be
able to form new breeding colonies next spring. Two more of this litter will go to Minchinhampton.

Six weeks old.

Eight weeks old.
The Help a Hedgehog Hospital is currently developing a patch of land to serve as a pre-release
training area, for young hedgehogs like these to learn to forage for themselves in a safe
environment, before they are released into the wild. We are hoping to be able to release young
hedgehogs into this facility, when the work is completed, which has been funded by our generous
supporters.
